Boston Public Health Commission Sock Drive

The Westwood Clerical chapter recently held a successful sock drive for the Boston Public Health Commission. Soon Rocky Gillis, Chapter Chair of the Boston Public Health Commission, will begin a second sock drive for January. Details to follow on where/how to donate socks. Thank you to everyone who participated in the first sock drive!

Athol and Orange Santa Funds

At the December 3, 2008 Membership Meeting, the Athol Town Employees Chapter of SEIU 888 voted to give back to the community by making donations to the Athol and Orange Santa Funds, the Athol Council on Aging Christmas Dinner and to the Athol/Orange Family Inn.

Food Drive for Kate's Kitchen in Holyoke

Scott Burns, President of the Holyoke Municipal Employees Chapter of SEIU Local 888 has organized a food drive for Kate's Kitchen in Holyoke, Mass. They will be collecting non-perishable food items to be delivered before the Thanksgiving Holiday. There will be several purple boxes at city hall in Holyoke, MA with the SEIU union logo to serve as drop-off points.



Lexington 888 Member Scott Dick Participated in the Pan-Mass Riding Challenge!

Scott Dick, member of the SEIU Local 888 Lexington School Custodians chapter, rode in this year's Pan-Mass Challenge cycling event on and raised $1,490 toward life-saving cancer research. Click here to view his story on the Pan-Mass website.



Annual Boston Public Health Commission/SEIU 888 Backpack Drive a Success!

 Once again, 888 members from around the City of Boston came together to help Boston school children return to school prepared with backpacks and school supplies. National Night Out Campaign in Chelsea

Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 34 million people participated in National Night Out 2007.

Quincy Members Promote Literacy, Education

Quincy - Altrusa

Two SEIU 888 members, Karen McCarthy of the Quincy Paraprofessionals and Judie McNaught of the Quincy Cafeteria Workers, donate volunteer time to serve the Quincy community. The have formed a volunteer chapter with the charitable organization Altrusa International on recent projects including to promote student reading and provide scholarships to pregnant teen mothers.

Members of the Athol town employees union (Local 888 SEIU) and family members took part in a clean-up effort in several areas of town Saturday morning. Led by Health Agent Phil Leger, four teams picked up trash in the downtown area (including the municipal parking lot), at Silver Lake Park and Lake Park, along Route 32 and in the areas around the South Main Street bridge and Fish Park. Each year the members of the Brockton Café Chapter award a $500.00 scholarship to a graduating Brockton High School student whose parent is a member of SEIU Local 888. This year Jean Roy is the proud mother of the recipient, Patrick Roy. After four years on the honor roll Patrick will be attending the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the fall, majoring in Finance.

The Nike 5K For Kids

The Nike 5K For Kids is sponsoring a walk to benefit the Greater Boston Area School Physical Education Departments. Please join us in the Nike 5K Walk for Kids Saturday, May 31st at 8:00 a.m.

Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk for former SEIU member Melissa Baron

The event is the "Breast Cancer 3-Day", it's a 3-day, 60 mile walk spread out over August 15, 16, & 17, 2008. All net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment.

I am walking to honor my niece, Melissa Barron (a former SEIU member, she worked at the Winchester DPW and was a member of our clerical union), who at 30 years old was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. Melissa is currently in week 14 of 16 weeks of chemo, and in June will undergo a double mastectomy. Hopefully, for her it will all be a thing of the past someday soon!
